First there is the architecture: this happens to be the train station where we will be tomorrow AM for a 4 hour trip on Dunedin Railways into Taieri Gorge. But today we walked around the downtown area with it's interesting old buildings then off to the seashore for a look at the penguins.

Welcome to beauty and pristine vistas. We boarded a small cruise vessel with 10 other people for an overnight trip into the Doubtful Sound of New Zealand's firodlands. The pictures and words just don't cut it.

We lucked out with the weather! Here we are overlooking Doubtful Sound after leaving the small, town of Te Anu. Not much of interest to post there except it is on the largest lake in the south island and (obviously) gorgeous. It's the beginning of many journeys into the wild treks of the southland. We are going deep into it . . . but not roughing it. You can peek the Sound beyond us as we traveled over the most expensive road ever built in NZ. It was built in the 1960's to construct an amazing hydro energy turbine/tunnel system - all without using a dam.
