We took a leisurely drive around the East Coast Road today. It was more the working side of the island. One of the most interesting stops we made was to Orwell's Historic Village. It is the actual village, not a re-creation and the volunteers running the place had relatives from way back in the little cemetery. The barn was filled with animals, too. These PEI people really knew how to work. In 1901 there were 14,000 farms on the island compared to just a little over 1,800 in 2001.

View from our room in Fredericton when we arrived.

We got 'local' and went to the harness races in PEI last night. What a hoot! (video in 'More Pictures' below). The day was bright and beautiful as we left the great Great George Hotel and headed to Fredericton for the first day of driving in our 2 day trek to Quebec City. We hadn't expected much in Fredericton but were again surprised . . .

Perfectly mowed pastures with happy cows, pristine farmhouses, multiple shining bays and inlets - PEI on this beautiful autumn day was a sight to behold. Pictures can’t possibly do it justice. The highlight, of course, was the Anne of Green Gables Heritage house. The author, L. M. Montgomery, lived nearby and published the book in 1908.

The marshes of northern Nova Scotia

OK, this is the reason for our trip - at least in my mind. Ever since reading the Anne of Green Gables books as a kid I've wanted to come here. Pinch me! A top of the list bucket item is being realized. We had planned to take the ferry from Pictou to PEI but when we arrived at the landing we discovered the ferry was cancelled. So, we drove to the bridge (2 1/2 hr) through dairy country and and tiny towns and actually were glad we did. Marshes, bays filled with boats, fresh bales of hay in pastures, etc. Our PEI hotel, the Great George, is right in Charlottetown and Oh-So-British!
